ANENA Avalanche Safety Training
SA1 & SA2 (Field-Based) - Learn how to assess avalanche risk and react effectively in the field.
Avalanches are one of the main hazards in winter mountain environments.
ANENA training courses (National Association for the Study of Snow and Avalanches) provide essential skills to help you understand, anticipate, and manage avalanche risk.
Our courses take place in the field, under real mountain conditions, with professional supervision.

Self-Rescue Level 1 (SA1)
Half-day (approx. 4 to 4.5 hours)
Training Objectives
Be able to independently manage a search and rescue situation following an avalanche accident. Be able to actively contribute to a group search led by a designated leader.
After the Training, You Will Be Able To:
- Carry and set up your equipment efficiently
- Participate in the group transmit/search check
- Use the basic functions of your avalanche transceiver (DVA)
- Apply basic emergency procedures in case of an avalanche accident
- Alert professional rescue services
- Search for and efficiently locate a buried victim in a simple scenario
- Excavate a buried victim using appropriate techniques
Practical Information
Training takes place both indoors (classroom or heated tipi for theoretical input) and outdoors (practical workshops and real-life scenarios). The course is based on protocols and techniques developed by Mountain Safety Info and the International Commission for Alpine Rescue.
State-certified mountain guide, ANENA-approved instructor
No prior experience required
Level: Beginner
This course is designed for anyone wishing to learn autonomous avalanche rescue skills.
Participants aged 12 and above may be accepted with prior approval from the instructor and a signed parental consent form.

Training Objectives
Be able to manage a simple multiple-burial avalanche scenario. Be able to organize a group avalanche rescue operation.
After the Training, You Will Be Able To:
- Carry and set up your equipment efficiently
- Organize the group transceiver (DVA) transmit/search check
- Use the basic functions of your avalanche transceiver
- Manage signal interference issues
- Search for and locate one or multiple buried victims
- Excavate a buried victim using appropriate techniques
- Apply group emergency procedures
- Alert professional rescue services
- Determine the appropriate strategy for the situation
- Lead and coordinate a rescue operation
- Conduct a search in a multiple-burial scenario
- Assist and brief professional rescuers upon arrival
